Heather Gravlin Camargo
The Glory Revisited
Aquatinting Etching
Shaping pieces within the context of light and dark reveals the textured
roots of the topic through the contours of things unseen. Utilizing the crafting
process of aquatinting, Heather Gravlin Camargo combines a painting style with
an acid etching technique to produce dramatic images with a historical
distinction. Deriving her portraits from photographs, Camargo tediously shapes
zinc plates to form her prints by flushing out the negative space. Camargo's
aquatint etchings focus on structure and shadows to contrast the foundation of
her pictures and provides a medium for her Biblical references.
"Working with a black and white technique combines my classical background,
my love for of cathedrals and a reverence for light. I work to capture a certain
essence within my prints, it’s a reflection of something I feel and gives me a
sense of peace."
Camargo is a Miami native who learned to polish her artistic style while
studying at The University Of Miami and Florida International University. After
11 years of crafting, Camargo sites Jesus Christ, Astrid Dalins and her family
as inspirational forces and motivators for her own pieces. Heather has also
displayed her work locally at Saturday and Sunday in the Park with Art,
Pinecrest, South Miami and Beaux Arts Festivals, where she won numerous awards
and honors. In addition, Camargo teaches art at the Center For The Arts At
Norland Middle School.
